Red Flags to Watch For
Based on our experience, here are the biggest warning signs when evaluating AI development partners:
- They guarantee specific accuracy numbers before seeing your data. Accuracy depends entirely on data quality and task complexity. Anyone guaranteeing 99% accuracy upfront is either lying or inexperienced.
- They cannot explain their approach in plain language. If they hide behind jargon and cannot make you understand what they are building, they either do not understand it themselves or are trying to obscure a simple approach.
- They do not discuss maintenance and iteration. AI systems require ongoing care. If the proposal ends at "delivery," they are selling you a prototype, not a product.
- They want to collect and own your data. Your data is your competitive advantage. Ensure contracts clearly state that you own all data and any models trained on your data.
- They have no experience in your industry. Domain expertise matters enormously in AI. A team that has built healthcare AI will navigate HIPAA, clinical workflows, and medical terminology much faster than a generalist team.
Starting the Conversation Right
When you reach out to an AI development team, prepare the following:
- A clear problem statement: "We want to automate X" is much better than "we want to use AI."
- Sample data: Even a small sample helps the team assess feasibility.
- Current workflow: How is this task done today? What are the pain points?

- Embedding: Converting text into numbers so the AI can compare meanings mathematically. This is what enables semantic search.
- Token: The unit AI models use to process text. Roughly 1 token equals 0.75 words. Costs are typically measured per token.
